Yep, it’s definitely a thing.
If you’re not familiar with the island’s celebrated zalzett tal-Malti – a traditional fresh Maltese sausage – well, you’re missing out. It’s just about as iconic as our local cheeselets (gbejniet), and bread (hobza tal-Malti), and is often enjoyed alongside both.
Made from ground local pork (arguably one of Malta’s tastiest exports), sea salt, crushed black peppercorns and coriander seeds, garlic and parsley, it’s a delectable treat that can be enjoyed raw (at your own risk), boiled, pan-fried or grilled, on its own or as a part of a dish.
And it seems that today, the local powers that be (and by that we mean popular radio hosts Nate, Frank and Rossi) have declared 30th July as the official day dedicated to Maltese sausage.
That’s right people, we have a Maltese Sausage Day!
And while this may be news to us, we ain’t complaining. Seriously, who are we to argue with a good thing? So, here’s a collection of different ways you can enjoy your Maltese sausage on this special day – consider it a gift, from us to you (you’re welcome).
The classic, smothered on bread
As part of a Maltese platter feast
As a topping on pizza or local ftira
Made into a delicious burger patty
As the base of the tastiest ragu sauce
Or compressed into a delicious scotch egg
And on colder days, as part of a hearty stew
Have we tempted you? Well, we’ll certainly be tucking in! Happy Maltese Sausage Day everyone!
