Great news for history lovers – Ta’ Kola Windmill in Xagħra, Gozo is officially welcoming visitors once again! The site reopened on Saturday 11th October at 10am, following a temporary closure caused by storm damage earlier this year.

During a routine inspection after severe weather, the windmill’s vanes unfortunately collapsed onto the roof, causing structural damage and leading to the hospitalisation of three Heritage Malta employees who were on-site at the time. Thankfully, all three are now on the road to recovery, with one already back at work.

Over the past week, repair works were carried out on the roof and surrounding structure, allowing the windmill to safely reopen to the public. Meanwhile, restoration of the vanes – which suffered extensive damage – is now underway and expected to take a few more months to complete.

Dating back over 300 years, Ta’ Kola Windmill is one of the few remaining windmills from the Knights’ period, offering a rare glimpse into Malta’s rural past. The site stands as a living reminder of the days when villagers would bring grain to the miller to produce flour for their daily bread.

Visitors are once again invited to step inside this historic gem and experience a piece of Gozo’s traditional heritage up close.
