Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park is celebrating its 10th anniversary since opening with a weekend of activities for families between 8th and 9th December, called Festa Natura (feast of nature).
This was announced during a press conference where the Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Dr José Herrera explained that Festa Natura, while celebrating the Park’s 10th anniversary, will also be a way to create more public awareness about the environment and waste management.
The Majjistral Park is home to various fauna and flora, and spans six kilometres of the northwest coast of Malta from Golden Bay to Xaghra l-Hamra. The coastline boasts steep cliffs and deep blue waters, scrubland, as well as the odd girna (local corbelled stone hut used for hunting and shelter).
It also exhibits a number of historical and archaeological sites. These include cart ruts, rubble walls, tombs, farmhouses, huts and military barracks, all dating back hundreds of years.
Works taking place within the park are aimed at bettering the biodiversity, and include afforestation, repair of rubble walls, waste clean-up and control of alien species found in the park.
Various activities based on three factors - learn, explore, sustain - will be organised, including yoga for adults and families, trekking, archery, snorkelling, kayaking, abseiling, zip-lining for kids and adults, bike tours, clean-ups, photography, bird watching and guided walks. Lots happening, right? This is all to emphasis sustainability in Malta’s environment, particularly in protected areas.
