‘Into the Shadows’: An exploration of dark times to open at Valletta’s Splendid this Friday 6th December
In an exhibition titled ‘Into the Shadows’, Olha Ruccya and Shalise will be collaborating for their first exhibition to take place at the iconic Splendid art space in Valletta’s Strait Street, opening this Friday 6th December at 7 PM. Their work comprises photography, paintings, graphic works, and poetry in the depiction of violence against women, and the way it shapes the way one experiences life.
Known for her Baroque-inspired, atmospheric photographic portraits, Olha Ruccya unveils the hidden impact of abuse through 15 evocative printed photographs and an emotionally resonant video expression. Through her evocative visual storytelling, Ruccya illuminates the enduring scars of trauma while celebrating the resilience and strength that arise from confronting it.
Shalise, on the other hand, takes a raw and expressive approach, presenting a vivid mix of 30 pieces, including paintings, graphic works, and poetry, in her signature series titled ‘The Love Hotel’. This deeply personal exploration of love and trauma examines how unresolved wounds perpetuate cycles of pain, distorting one’s relationships and connections. Through chaotic, dynamic visuals and poignant words, Shalise invites viewers to confront the illusions of love and take steps toward breaking free from these destructive patterns.
The exhibition presents a mission beyond art – to support survivors of violence through donating part of the proceeds from the art sales to local and international organisation dedicated to this cause. By raising awareness about the prevalence and lasting effects of abuse, the artists hope to inspire healing, resilience, and meaningful change. Together, they envision a future where these cycles of pain are broken, and new patterns of love and connection emerge.
‘Into the Shadows’ will be on display at the Splendid till the 15th of December, and admission is free of charge. For more information, visit the exhibition website.
