From folklore to flora: Discover the supernatural side of nature in Mdina this March
Ever wondered what kind of stories Malta’s plants and animals might hold? You can uncover the answers on Wednesday 18th March during ‘Nature in Maltese Folklore – The Supernatural in the Natural’, an evening lecture by biologist and published author Stephan D. Mifsud.
Taking place at the stunning National Museum of Natural History in Mdina, the talk will take listeners on a fascinating journey to the crossroads where nature and belief coincide.
Set against the historic backdrop of the museum, the lecture will explore a selection of Maltese flora and fauna that have long featured in local folklore, legends, and traditional superstitions. From symbols of protection and healing to omens and moral warnings, native plants and animals have played a powerful role in shaping Malta’s cultural imagination.
The evening shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked connection between the natural environment and the island’s intangible heritage, revealing how generations of Maltese communities interpreted, feared, respected, and mythologised the world around them.
The lecture will be delivered in English and runs from 18:00 to 19:30. Tickets can be purchased online via Heritage Malta’s website or from any Heritage Malta museum or site.
