The church’s history stretches back to the late 16th century.
St Francis of Assisi Church (San Franġisk t’Assisi) is a quiet yet significant landmark in Valletta, the capital of Malta.
Its history stretches back to the late 16th century, when construction first began in 1598. The church was completed in 1607, reflecting the religious devotion and architectural tastes of the period. In 1681, the building underwent an important reconstruction made possible through the generosity of Grand Master Gregorio Carafa. His lasting contribution is still visible today, with his coat of arms prominently displayed on the church’s façade.
The church continued to evolve over the centuries. During the 1920s, it was expanded with the addition of a dome, enhancing both its architectural presence and its interior space.
Today, St Francis of Assisi Church is a place of worship and a treasure house of art. It contains notable works by renowned artists such as Mattia Preti, Pietro Gagliardi, and Filippo Paladini, alongside a revered statue of St Francis himself.
Recognised for its historical, artistic, and cultural value, the church is listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.
