Happy times at Ġnejna Bay! Coral the turtle returns to the wild after year-long rehab
Despite a number of setbacks, Coral showed remarkable resilience throughout her rehabilitation!
After a full year in rehabilitation, Coral the sea turtle has finally returned to the open sea, marking a heartwarming success story for wildlife rescue in Malta.
Coral’s journey began on 26 January 2025, when a member of the public spotted a turtle in distress close to shore and immediately alerted Malta Ranger Unit officers who were already in the area. Thanks to this timely intervention, Coral was rescued quickly and safely.
Following established wildlife rescue procedures, the Rangers secured the turtle and contacted the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta, ensuring no further harm was caused. Coral was then transferred into the care of volunteers at Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Sadly, the injuries she sustained meant that one of her flippers had to be amputated. Despite this setback, Coral showed remarkable resilience throughout her rehabilitation.
With expert care, patience, and dedication from the Wildlife Rescue Team, Coral made a full recovery and was deemed fit to return to the wild. Last week, she was released at Ġnejna Bay, swimming confidently back into her natural habitat.
Be free, Coral!
