Mistletoe is having a warm, cosy Christmas thanks to the work of Nature Trust and its dedicated volunteers
This Christmas, a tiny hedgehog named Mistletoe is helping shine a spotlight on the vital work being done to protect Malta’s wildlife. Currently in the care of Nature Trust – FEE Malta (Gozo Section), Mistletoe is just one of the many animals rescued, rehabilitated, and safeguarded throughout the year by the organisation’s volunteers.
While festive cheer fills homes across the islands, the holiday season can be especially dangerous for wildlife. Increased human activity, traffic, and habitat disruption often lead to injuries among protected species such as hedgehogs, birds, and sea turtles. Nature Trust’s Wildlife Rescue Team Malta remains on call throughout the year, responding to reports of animals in distress and ensuring they receive proper medical care and rehabilitation.
The organisation reminds the public that all animals in their care are protected by law and must never be harmed or kept as pets. Their trained volunteers operate under official wildlife handling permits and work closely with veterinarians to give each rescued animal the best chance of recovery and release back into the wild.
Members of the public can also learn more by visiting the rehabilitation centre at Xrobb L-Għaġin. Entrance is free (with donations always welcome), however, booking in advance is necessary, please contact [email protected] for more information.
As Mistletoe’s story shows, protecting wildlife is a shared responsibility – and sometimes, it starts with a phone call.
