Grow, baby grow! This Birzebbuga bay has been reopened just in time for the summer peak
Yep, there's another beach for us to chill at this summer! St George’s Bay in Birzebbuga has received some TLC, and underwent a regeneration project to enlarge the beach significantly... officially re-opening yesterday morning, ready to welcome beach-goers.

Birzebbuga’s little bay is one of a number of beaches around the Maltese Islands that are being replenished for the summer months. The regeneration and replenishment project dredges up sand from the outer seabed of the same bay and puts it on land to create a wider beach. This method is also an environmentally friendly way of creating larger beaches, and also helps the area to replenish its own sand, as it should.

Over the coming days, the Maltese Islands should also have another two bays re-open for business! Balluta Bay, which underwent this same experimental replenishment project last summer, will be reopened for the summer months, as well as a new permanent bay in Marsaxlokk, called Ghar l-Ahmar, which has had a barrier installed to stop sand from being lost in intense weather conditions.

Works for St Thomas Bay in Marsaskala to undergo this replenishment should begin soon, making it a fourth beach to receive this treatment.
