In a major milestone for marine conservation, sea urchin eggs have been successfully hatched in a laboratory at Aquatic Resources Malta for the first time. The announcement was made by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, who highlighted the achievement as an important step for the protection of marine life.

The breakthrough forms part of a wider initiative focused on conserving and reinforcing sea urchin populations in Maltese waters. Alongside the current moratorium on sea urchin harvesting, the project aims to support the recovery of the species and safeguard the long-term health of the marine ecosystem.

This project is a tangible action towards preserving the Maltese marine environment and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

Sea urchins are now central to another successful scientific effort led by Aquatic Resources Malta, reflecting the organisation’s growing role in marine research and conservation.

Good news!
