Gold rush continues! More medals for Malta at GSSE Andorra, including first golds for swimming and artistic gymnastics
The medals just keep rolling in at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in Andorra, with Team Malta already securing historic wins across multiple disciplines – and we’re only on Day 2!
Swimming went into the record books, as Sasha Gatt claimed Malta’s first-ever gold medal in swimming, winning the 800-metre freestyle in a nail-biting finish. Sasha touched the wall at 8:49.74, just ahead of Monaco’s Angeline Pou (8:50.26), with Luxembourg’s Lou Jomnet placing third.
In another incredible first, Malta’s artistic gymnastics team made history by winning gold in the team event – a landmark achievement for the sport. The powerhouse lineup included Philippa Busuttil, Lyana Curmi Inguanez, Janet Galea, Julia Galea, and Sophie St John.
More gold glory came from Gina McNamara, who dominated the 800m race in Athletics, while Nirvana Micallef added a silver medal in the 200m Butterfly in Swimming. Gymnast Sophie St John also impressed individually, taking silver in the Women’s All-Around Artistic Gymnastics category. Another exciting moment was Thea Parnis Coleiro claiming a bronze medal in the 100m sprint final in Athletics, in her GSSE debut. Also in Athletics, Jared Micallef and Jemima Louise Farley both picked up silvers in the Men's 800m and Women's 10,000m respectively.
These triumphs – alongside Jessica Vella’s triumph yesterday – keep adding to the excitement of the Games, which will last till Sunday 1st June.
Keep cheering and stay tuned!
