The picturesque image, which likely dates back to the late 1800s, details the beautiful fountain opposite the law courts building, in the same area where the Great Siege Monument now stands. It’s hard to believe a beautiful structure like this once stood in such a busy Valletta road!
We’re not exactly sure why the fountain was removed. It’s suggested that the fountain was relocated to the Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana, in order to make space for the Great Siege Monument.
The monument, which commemorates the famous 1565 Great Siege of Malta was inaugurated on 8th May 1927, and of course still stands proudly to this day, passed by many citizens on the daily.
This being said, many note that the fountain had to be relocated, as it was causing damage to the surrounding buildings, in particular, the historic St John’s Co Cathedral. We’re not really sure, but there had to be a good reason for it!
