Fun fact! The Barrakka lift pays tribute to Valletta’s historic fortifications
The old inspires the new!

Francesca Vella

Did you know that the design of the Barrakka Lift, which carries pedestrians from the Valletta Waterfront up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, was inspired by Valletta’s iconic fortifications?

Designed by architectural firm AP Valletta, the lift’s form intentionally mirrors the strong lines and solid structure of the surrounding bastions. But that’s not all – its height and elegant proportions also pay tribute to the classical Doric column, adding a subtle touch of ancient grandeur to its modern functionality.

Wrapped in a translucent screen, the lift structure seamlessly integrates a stairway and vertical framework, forming a single, unified architectural element. This clever design ensures it blends harmoniously with the historic stone arcades of the Upper Barrakka Gardens – striking a balance between ancient heritage and innovation.

That’s something to think about during your next ride in the lift!

Have you ever noticed the Barrakka lift’s particular design?
