Flying through time! Take a look at this 1970s throwback to Luqa Airport
Nostalgia alert!

Francesca Vella

A nostalgic photo from the 1970s has resurfaced on the Facebook group 'Iż-Żurrieq u l-madwar Zurrieq and its surroundings', offering a fascinating glimpse into what air travel looked like decades ago at Luqa Airport – now called Malta International Airport. The black-and-white image captures a scene that feels worlds apart from today’s modern terminals, showing travellers dressed in vintage fashion, walking to the plane they’re about to board, rather than getting the bus that we’re now used to.

Back then, air travel had a different charm – fewer crowds, simpler check-ins, and minimal security compared to today! As it still does now, back then Luqa Airport served as Malta’s main gateway to the world, welcoming passengers in an era before budget airlines and digital boarding passes.

The photo shows that even luggage has changed, with most travellers carrying handheld suitcases or briefcases – can you imagine having to carry your 10kg luggage all the way to the plane?!

Fast forward to today, and Malta International Airport has transformed into a bustling hub connecting the island to destinations across Europe and beyond. While the efficiency and technology have improved, there’s something undeniably charming about looking back at the golden days of aviation.

What do you miss most about travel from decades past?
