Featured gardens include Argotti, Sa Maison and Il-Mall.
If you’ve ever strolled through one of Malta’s lush public gardens and wondered about the stories behind the trees, flowers, and historic statues, there’s now a website for that!
A brand-new online platform, maltabotanicgardens.gov.mt, brings together detailed information on Malta’s most iconic botanical gardens, making it easier than ever to explore their beauty and history, whether from your phone, laptop, or on-site during your next walk.
The website focuses on botanical gardens in the Floriana area, including Argotti Gardens, Il-Mall (Maglio), San Filippu (Upper and Lower), Notre Dame Ditch Garden, Sa Maison, Tal-Milorda, and Jubilee Garden (Pinetum).
Each of these gardens has its own virtual tour, leading you through points of interest and uncovering both the botanical and historical significance of each space. The research behind the platform is drawn from rich archival sources, including the National Archives of Malta, ensuring that each fact shared is reliable as well as fascinating.
For flora lovers, the website also includes an interactive plant map, which currently showcases around 1,870 plants from 311 different species. Click on a point, and you’ll find an image of the plant, its name, and a detailed description, with over 965 species descriptions available in both Maltese and English.
Each garden is also introduced as part of a living ecosystem. For example, The Mall Gardens are described as a ‘Pollinator Garden’ – a haven for butterflies, bees, hoverflies and other pollinators that are vital to our environment.
Visitors can learn about the essential role pollinators play in our daily lives, the threats they face, and the stunning diversity of flowering plants that support them.
So the next time you walk past a rare tree or curious bloom – tap into its story!
