People are split about whether it’s a Blue Shark or an Oceanic Whitetip Shark.
Whilst Malta and Gozo’s climate and environment aren’t exactly ideal for wildlife to flourish, our sea undoubtedly compensates for that…
We practically hear about some interesting marine sighting every week – however the latest creature to catch some swimmers’ eyes is certainly uncommon to our waters.
Gozitan company Vitamin Sea Watersports took to social media to publish a few amazing images of a seemingly friendly shark spotted at Dwejra.
Whilst there’s no doubt nearby swimmers were somewhat shocked by the sighting, the shark showed absolutely no intention of harming anyone.
Now, marine-life lovers all over the country are desperately trying to identify the photographed shark’s species.
Most people seem split between two species; Blue Shark or Oceanic Whitetip Shark.
The former is certainly more commonly spotted around the Maltese islands, with the latest known sighting having taken place just last month around Filfla.

The Oceanic Whitetip Shark on the other hand is a very rarely seen swimming in Maltese waters. Unfortunately, due to overfishing, this species has become rather endangered in recent years.
Blue Sharks are rarely known to attack humans. Oceanic Whitetip Sharks however are known to be rather aggressive.
Whatever the species, let’s hope it’s friendly!
