The island’s capital, Victoria, has been shortlisted to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031, alongside a yet-to-be-announced city in Spain.
The announcement was made following a two-day pre-selection meeting held at the Valletta Design Cluster, where an independent panel of experts appointed by the European Commission and national authorities reviewed proposals submitted by two Maltese cities – Victoria and Vittoriosa (Birgu).
While Birgu’s bid did not make it through, Victoria’s vision for culture-led regeneration, community engagement, and sustainable cultural growth clearly impressed the panel.
Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici shared his congratulations on social media, writing:
‘Congratulations to Victoria, Gozo for being pre-selected by an independent panel of experts appointed by the European Union to continue Malta’s journey toward the European Capital of Culture 2031.’
If successful, Victoria will become the second Maltese city to hold the prestigious title, following Valletta’s celebrated year as European Capital of Culture in 2018.
The Gozitan capital now has until September 2026 to further develop its cultural programme before the final decision is made.
The European Capital of Culture title runs for a full year, attracting EU and government funding to support large-scale cultural events, community projects, and creative initiatives, all designed to boost local culture, tourism, and the economy.
Here’s hoping 2031 will see Gozo shining brightly on Europe’s cultural map!
