End of an era! Iconic Rabat wine bar calls it quits after 14 years
Many loyal customers were sad to hear about this iconic spot’s closure…

Few places in the world, let alone Malta, are simultaneously historic, idyllic, and home to culinary excellence.

Rabat, or more specifically, the Saqqajja Hill, is one of those places – but chances are it wouldn’t be anything like the wonder it is today if it wasn’t for one iconic establishment, the Tat-Tarag Wine Bar.

And after 14 years of serving customers great food, drink, and atmosphere, the wine bar’s owner has decided to call it quits.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the coming-to-an-end of a long and successful trip,” Rudolf Grima wrote on social media yesterday.

“Today week will be the last day of operation of our popular wine bar known to you as Tat-Tarag. I am very proud to have been one of the first wine bars in Malta which, to date, is still one of the most popular,” he continued.

Rudolf recalled how 14 years ago, he came across what was then just an empty outlet on Saqqajja Hill.

Despite the area being practically empty of any restaurants or bars at the time, Rudolf took the plunge, rented the outlet, and turned it into the Tat-Tarag Wine Bar.

“Today I am proud to say that Tat-Tarag has survived through the last 14 and a half years through hard work – not only mine, but of the many that have worked there,” the Owner wrote.

“We were always a family and our patrons appreciated this and visited us time and time again,” he continued.

As one would expect, many loyal customers were sad to read about this iconic spot’s closure – so much so that Rudolf’s post amassed almost 500 comments in less than 24 hours!

“Most of all I am proud to say that from the successful venture that was Tat-Tarag, the Saqqajja Hill location was born,” Rudolf pointed out.

“Saqqajja Hill is now a culinary location hosting a few of Malta’s finest restaurants. From the time when Tat-Tarag was born to the present day, it has become home to five restaurants which operate daily,” he continued.

Amongst other establishments, the Saqqajja Hill nowadays hosts restaurants such as The Fork & Cork – a spot that’s been awarded the Michelin Plate for its mouthwatering Mediterranean Cuisine.

“I will be ending this chapter in my life with pride and I look forward to starting a new chapter with hope and enthusiasm,” Rudolf continued.

Good luck Rudolf and team!
