The central area of Malta was hit the hardest.
On this day exactly 21 years ago, Malta was hit with one of the largest floods it had ever experienced.
On the night of 14th September 2003, torrential rain started falling all over the country and it only stopped around seven hours later.
The heavy rainfall and never-ending lightning kept people awake all night.
This September storm brought with it a whopping 100.8 mm of rain, which, in turn, led to horrifying flooding all over the islands.
The central area of Malta was hit the hardest, with many residents calling the emergency services for help due to the extreme flooding they were experiencing.
Mosta was the town that experienced the worst of this fearsome storm. At one point, over 250mm of water was measured.
“September of 2003 still goes down as the most flooded and stormy month of all time,” local weather page It-Temp Madwarna reported on Facebook.
Many took to the post’s comments section to recall their experience with the storm.
One woman wrote about how she lost control of her car and was carried away to a nearby deep flooded field. Another said that she was stuck in her car for hours, unable to get out.
Another woman, who was pregnant at the time of the storm, recalled how difficult it was to get to the hospital when she was about to go into labour.
