Dive into Malta’s underwater wonders at these 6 awesome diving spots around the islands!
Diving in Malta is a great experience that everyone should try at least once. There are a few medical factors that you have to be aware of before you take the plunge, but if your doctor and instructor give you the all clear, give it a go - you might find that you absolutely love it!
Finding the perfect location for your first dive isn’t a major deal. Your first session is mostly about learning the core basics and getting a feeling for the sport, but if you’ve been on quite a few dives, these top locations should be on your bucket list.
Ghar Lapsi
The drive to Ghar Lapsi alone is incredible in itself: the stunning view of Filfla in the distance, the deep, blue sea and the tall trees that christen the road leading up to the spectacular dive spot. There are so many idle rocks hanging about in this area, so many fish to spot and treasures to find.
P31 Wreck
With a maximum depth of 20m, this German patrol boat, made for Malta in 1992, serves as a wreck dive location and, catch this, it was put there purposely! In 2009, after serving as a border control vessel, the ship was scuttled to the sea bed on the west coast of Comino. Excellent if you’re looking to scurry through some abandoned corridors.
Cirkewwa
A top location for divers, be they newbies or pros. Cirkewwa is a great spot that welcomes a variety of sea life, with Gozo Ferry passengers often claiming to spot dolphins in the early hours of the morning - it only makes sense that there would be plenty of life below the surface.
Qawra
Qawra is another great spot for wrecks, and this area is full of diving schools willing to take you on a couple of dives throughout the week so clear up some time and get the adventure started. Qawra is great for a dive or two, it’s quite a comfortable area to reach and shows off some of Malta’s underwater beauty.
Bugibba
Be sure to pack yourself an underwater camera for this trip. You’d be surprised with how many fish friends you’ll be making on your expedition. Much like the Qawra area, Bugibba is fairly comfortable to discover, there’s lower ground to get your bearings in and deeper areas to get your deep-dive on.
Gharb, Gozo
In Gharb, you can dive to your heart’s delight and even compare the sea-life between Malta and Gozo; although the two islands are minutes apart, they do show some differences in the variety and frequency of fish. A Gozo dive is always great, so this one won’t fall short either.
Blue Lagoon, Comino
The Blue Lagoon is known for its crystal clear waters of a turquoise tone, the crisp feeling you get once the water touches your toes and the amazing variety of sea life you can expect to spot. Diving in the Blue Lagoon is sure to be an adventure that will blow your underwater-mind.
If there are a few or many of these spots that you haven’t yet discovered, get in touch with your preferred diving school and get your dive on - you won’t regret it!
