Even though the chapel has been there for centuries, it was only discovered by chance only 77 years ago and this was only because of World War II.
During the war air raids, the area surrounding the temple was heavily hit by bombs which eventually led to its discovery, according to Kappa Vision.
There’s even a legend behind the story on how this mysterious underground chapel was discovered. The legend says that a boy lost his shoe and as he was trying to find it, he came across a hole that led to him finding the chapel.
The original entrance for the chapel is thought to have been a hidden one somewhere near the nearby valley leading to the sea.
Byzantine rites were found within the chapel and certain signs indicate that the chapel was either dedicated to to Our Lady of Perpetual Help or the birth of Christ.
