Did you know that back in the 1950’s Malta was preparing itself in case of a nuclear attack?
In a document uploaded by the National Archives of Malta on their social media, one can see how Malta was preparing itself in case the unimaginable happened and a nuclear bomb destroying Malta, dropped.
The 1959 document shows how Malta was studying the impacts of an A1 megaton nuclear bomb over the Senglea and Grand Harbour Area.
Plans for shelter were already being made as the requirements for the safety from such bombs were being analysed.
The map shows how the country was divided into nine different zones as studies were being conducted to show how different areas of the country would be impacted.
In fact, a nuclear war shelter still exists in Mosta. It was dug into the side of Rihana valley, extremely deep into the rock in order to keep the radiation away. Unfortunately, the shelter is no longer preserved.
