designMT Expo: Malta’s inaugural event showcasing tradition and innovation in design
It’s all happening from the 30th September to the 5th October.
Malta is set to host its first-ever designMT expo, a premier event that highlights the intersection of tradition and innovation in design. Taking place across iconic venues in Valletta from the 30th of September to the 5th of October 2024, designMT will feature a dynamic blend of exhibitions and discussions that spotlight the country’s design talent while exploring contemporary trends that shape modern living.
The event, organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation with support from key cultural and governmental bodies, promises to bring together a diverse range of designers, industry experts, and emerging talents. It will feature four free exhibitions showcasing carefully curated contemporary design pieces, each reflecting the balance between functionality, style, and cultural significance.
These pieces will be displayed at historic venues that symbolise the evolution of spatial design—from the legacy of the Knights of St John to the seamless integration of modern aesthetics within historic spaces.
The venues include the Auberge d’Aragon, Fortress Builders, St John’s Cavalier, and the Valletta Design Cluster, each open daily with extended hours during the popular Notte Bianca festival.
Beyond exhibitions, designMT will host four thematic events aimed at sparking dialogue on how design influences various aspects of Maltese life. These events will cover topics like Spatial Design and Malta’s built environment, Flavour by Design and culinary creativity, Digital Design and the role of technology, and the impact of Fast Fashion on modern consumption.
With the support of partners like the Arts Council Malta and Heritage Malta, designMT aims to not only celebrate design but also inspire innovative solutions to the challenges of sustainability and cultural preservation. Full details, including a list of exhibitors, can be found on here.
