COVID-19: Is-Serkin to close its doors as of tomorrow, prohibited from offering takeaway
“It doesn’t make sense.”

It’s a sad day for pastizzi lovers (virtually everyone on the Maltese Islands) as the iconic Is-Serkin in Rabat is forced to close its doors as per new COVID-19 restrictions. Starting tomorrow, all bars, clubs and kazini have to close until 1st December. Being licensed as a bar, Serkin is included in this batch, too.

“So many people come to me everyday because I sell food they can afford; €2 is enough to buy you a hobza. Where can these people go now?” Kenneth Ciangura, Serkin’s owner, told LovinMalta. Ciangura questioned why places like his will have to close down entirely and cannot even offer takeaway service.

“It would have made sense if the authorities told me I could operate as a takeaway and banned me from selling alcohol, because at least I would have been able to continue serving people this way.”

“The idea behind these rules is to prevent people gathering together so why can’t I operate as a takeaway? Restaurants and gyms will remain open as they were but I’m being forced to shut down entirely. It doesn’t make sense.”

From tomorrow, establishments possessing a bar licence, along with kazini and clubs, will have to close their doors entirely until 1st December. Those places licensed as snack bars and kiosks are permitted to operate until 11am but won’t be allowed to sell alcohol.
