Butterfly effect! Smoke from Canada wildfires reaches Malta and the Mediterranean
The smoke travelled over 8,000km by combining with several storm systems that transported it across the globe
Have you been noticing particularly hazy weather recently? You’re not imagining it!
The Facebook page Severe Weather Europe has brought to the world’s attention the massive smoke clouds covering the Mediterranean, including Malta. Although it sounds incredible, these clouds originated in Canada, a whopping 8,000 kilometres away, produced by the wildfires that have been ravaging the country over the past month.
The Maltese Islands Weather page observed that these clouds of smoke managed to travel the impressive distance across the Atlantic Ocean and northern Europe to reach the Mediterranean, by combining with several storm systems that they met along the way.
Canada is still unfortunately battling with the wildfires burning across the country, having recently recorded the largest wildfire in a century in Jasper National Park in Alberta, which burned through over 330 square kilometres.
This weather phenomenon, Maltese Islands Weather tells us, ‘serves as a reminder that all that happens in any part of the world, no matter how isolated, eventually affects each and every one of us.’
Did you notice any haziness or reddish hues in the Maltese skies over the past few days?
