Buried treasure! Aldo Moro roadworks cover up ancient Roman tombs
The Superintendence for Cultural Heritage speaks out

Roman tombs which were discovered during the current roadworks happening in Aldo Moro, Marsa, have been built over, so as to pass a storm drainpipe. The tombs were discovered close to the Turkish Military Cemetery during the large roadworks project back in February 2018.

But while they may be covered up, they're not totally lost. “They’re still there under the road. Whoever’s going to dig next is going to find them again,” said Joe Magro Conti, Superintendent for Cultural Heritage. The Superintendence is the government entity that examined the site of archaeological interest before the works at Aldo Moro continued.

Magro Conti said that remains found on sites, such as bones – animal and potentially human – as well as pottery and other artefacts of archaeological importance, were examined and taken by the entity for preservation. But the site is still covered. Will it be dug up again in the future? Only time will tell.
