Blast from the past! Step back into the Ice Age with Heritage Malta’s new fossil collection
This brilliant collection was almost lost.
Heritage Malta’s collection of artifacts has just gotten a bit bigger!
It has just been announced that the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage has passed down a Quaternary fossil collection dating back to the Ice Age to the national heritage regulator.
This collection is set to be displayed together with the national collection.
Amongst the 21 fossils, viewers can spot elephant bones, elephant teeth, and hippopotami teeth, which Heritage Malta say can be traced to “Ta’ Zuta (limits of Had-Dingli) and Ghar Dalam.”

The brilliant collection was almost lost, as it was originally set to be auctioned. Fortunately for us, the fossils were all given to Heritage Malta after a productive police investigation.
This was possible thanks to the Cultural Heritage Act of 2002, which states that “any person who, even by chance, discovers objects of cultural heritage value is to inform the national regulator immediately.“
