If there’s one thing the Maltese islands excel at, it’s pyrotechnics.
From huge firework displays to fiery giggifogus, enthusiasts all over the nation dedicate hours upon hours of their days to this unique hobby.
One particular pyrotechnics group from Birkirkara – the Ghaqda tan-Nar Santa Liena 18 ta’ Awwissu – has pushed its talent to the limit by putting up a record-breaking and awe-inspiring display.
Just last week, this group lit up the Birkirkara square with a whopping 260 lanterns (fjakkoli) for what is called a fjakkolata.
A fjakkolata entails the lighting of several lanterns, oftentimes creating a particular pattern, design, or image.
Birkirkara’s latest fjakkolata saw hundreds of brightly-coloured lanterns placed in the shape of a cross.
The group’s efforts earned it the national record for the biggest fjakkolata on the islands.
This display was put up on 2nd May, one the eve of the feast commemorating the discovery of the Holy Cross.
Well done!
