Maltese multidisciplinary artist Ryan Falzon returns with Firmament, a major solo exhibition opening at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta starting from the 14th May to 28th June 2026.

Building on the momentum of his 2025 Milan exhibition Arcana, Ryan Falzon’s latest body of work expands his ongoing exploration of Mediterranean belief systems while venturing into more conceptual and metaphysical territory.

Ryan Falzon Firnament exhibition

Curated by François Zammit and Veruschka Goetz, Firmament takes inspiration from the ancient notion of the celestial dome separating the earthly from the divine. This idea becomes a central metaphor throughout the exhibition, reflecting humanity’s enduring tension between material existence and spiritual longing. Through paintings, text, and installations, Ryan Falzon constructs a series of liminal spaces - zones of rupture and transition that invite viewers to contemplate both inner and outer realities.

A key reference point within the exhibition is the iconic Flammarion etching, depicting a traveller piercing the sky to uncover the mechanics of the cosmos. This image encapsulates the exhibition’s core theme: the human desire to transcend the visible world and access deeper truths. Ryan Falzon translates this impulse into a contemporary visual language that blends ancient cosmologies with modern symbolism.

Known for his politically charged imagery and playful use of pop culture, the artist shifts focus in Firmament toward influences from Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and medieval esoteric traditions. Fragmented symbols, cosmic motifs, and textual interventions create a layered narrative that reflects psychological tension and existential inquiry.

Ultimately, Firmament is conceived as an open invitation into a space where past and present, material and metaphysical, converge. By reinterpreting primordial themes through a contemporary lens, Ryan Falzon encourages audiences to reflect on how ancient belief systems continue to resonate in modern consciousness - and why the urge to look beyond remains as powerful as ever.
