A total of 65 loggerhead turtles have successfully hatched from the fifth nest of the season at Ramla l-Ħamra, marking another milestone for turtle conservation in Malta.
This latest hatching, known as Nest 5, Johanna’s third nest, was inspected by officials from Nature Trust – FEE Malta, Nature Trust – FEE Malta Gozo Section, and the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA).
The nest contained 71 eggs in total. Of these, one was unfertilised, five stopped developing partway, and the remaining 65 hatched successfully. Two hatchlings were taken under veterinary care for further observation. This represents an impressive hatch rate of 91.5%, with 93% success among fertilised eggs!
The achievement highlights the dedication of over 300 volunteers across Malta and Gozo, who work tirelessly to monitor turtle nests around the clock throughout the nesting season. Their efforts, together with the support of conservation authorities, are vital in protecting these endangered species and giving them the best possible chance of survival.
With five nests now completed, attention turns to the final nest of the summer, where conservationists and nature lovers alike eagerly await the next wave of hatchlings.
Be free, little hatchlings!
