Back home! FOUR hedgehogs released in Malta after undergoing rehab
The first hedgehog was rescued on 31st July with ‘missing patches of spines’.

Local eNGO Wildlife Rescue Team has just released four rehabilitated hedgehogs that had been picked up over the summer.

The organisation took to social media to offer some insight into each creature’s road to recovery.

First up was a female hedgehog who was found at the end of July ‘with missing patches of spines’. Since these are hedgehogs’ main defence mechanism, this creature was kept under the Wildlife Rescue Team’s care until her spines grew back.

The second hedgehog was rescued on 15th September with a terrible injury close to his ear. “The wound was cleaned, and after antibiotics were started, the wound started healing quite nicely,” the eNGO wrote.

The third hedgehog to be released, Zen, was found on 17th September after he was scraped by a car. The poor thing had several ticks and was suffering from severe dehydration, but thankfully, Zen responded very well to his treatment.

Also found on the 17th, the fourth and final hedgehog to be released was treated by the Team after someone called to alert them of its injuries. It was bitten by a dog multiple times, but the injuries were treated immediately – leading to a speedy recovery and release!

While these creatures are adorable, please remember that hedgehogs, along with other wild animals, are illegal to keep as pets according to Legal Notice 49 of 1993.

The Wildlife Rescue Team gave their thanks to the public for calling about any animals in distress; to their vets; as well as their volunteers. If you see any creatures in distress (listed here), call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 9999 9505.

Well done to the Wildlife Rescue Team!
