Back in the day, it was very common for locals to venture beyond our islands’ shores to places like the UK, the States or Down Under in search of better opportunities. This local woman did just that, but what was meant to be a six-month trip quickly turned into a much longer adventure.

Doris Brady (born Cutajar), who shared a snapshot of her original passenger ticket on Facebook group Nostalgia Malta, left Malta and travelled to the UK on 11th October 1964, initially for six months to work at Rowntrees Chocolate Factory in Yorkshire.
But, three months into what was meant to be a six-month stay, she had her first date with her now-hubby! How adorable is that? “I am surprised we haven’t killed each other!” she says in her post.

“I went up to the UK single, and now I’m a grandmother of four!” she says, having remained in England. “My parents really cried at the airport,” she says. “I told them I’ll be gone for just six months, but I stayed 55 years instead!” Oops.
