Local sister duo The New Victorians are releasing a brand new single, and we’re just bouncing off the walls with excitement! Speaking to Philippa and Bettina, we found out all there is to know about their new music and upcoming launch.

Before we delve into that, if you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years and don’t know who these fantastic musicians are, here’s a crash-course about the amazing sister duo that is The New Victorians. This song-writing duo, established in 2011, fuse their classical music foundation with their love for technology, creating an Electronic Indie sound. Both Philippa and Bettina play various instruments, and if you ever get the chance to see them live in concert, their performance will take you on a musical journey of fun, love and laughter.

The sisters have had various albums and singles released over the past three years. In 2015, they released their debut album SEEKER SEEKER, with singles like Keep Me In Love, and in 2016, their theatrical debut of MARA played sold out houses at the Manoel Studio Theatre. This year, they’ve been super busy, launching their EP titled Silence with which they opened for multi-platinum artists Anastacia on her European Tour, Evolution, and topped the local charts with the single Lie Liar. They also worked with an all-female cast for a newly adapted version of MARA, which they also took to Scotland!

Ok, so now that you have a little background info, here’s a sneak peek into their upcoming new single Me&YOU, in collaboration with Fino, launching on 5th December! Speaking to Philippa and Bettina, they tell us that this single is “a moody winter tune for all them rainy days” - which we are having a lot of lately, so perfect timing! “With this single, we’ve gone back to our roots a bit, so much more acoustic guitar and piano-heavy, although there’s still the electronic element from the Silence EP.”

Asking them about the dedication and inspiration behind the song, Philippa jumped in. “I wrote it two years ago when I was living in Glasgow with a good friend of mine who was going through a tough time whilst her mother was battling cancer. This friend happens to be Maxine Aquilina from Jays of Sunshine, who’s just turned that whole situation into something extremely beautiful, but this was written at a time when it wasn’t yet. It’s really just a song about feeling helpless when people you love are hurting, and acknowledging that sometimes all you can offer is to be with them in silence.” Philippa says that she played the song for the first time during a performance class at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with Maxine in the room. This week, she sent Maxine the track on the day she launched Jays of Sunshine. “We joke that she’s my musical inspiration, but I know she (and her legendary partner Angie) are going to be that and so much more to so many kids.”

This month, the duo performed live at Hugo’s Terrace, and also put up Rave and Behave for Ziguzajg, which gave them the chance to see their 91-year-old grandma wave an LED Foam Stick in the air to an electronic pop song for kids. You go, Nanna Mary! So, what’s next for this one-of-a-kind, singing duo? “We’re currently in the process of planning our MARA development week in December when we’ll get back to work on our original, audio theatrical piece that celebrates women. We also have a Maltese re-imagined classic that we wish to release in the coming months!”
