‘Architopia: Echoes of Elsewhere’: An exhibition discovering the intricate architectural visions shaping Malta’s art scene
Architopia: Echoes of Elsewhere is the latest solo exhibition by Maltese artist Glenn Ellul, opening on 12th June at 7:30pm at il-Kamra ta' Fuq. Curated by Melanie Erixon, the exhibition presents a captivating collection of intricate ink drawings that explore the space between architecture, memory, imagination, and emotion.
Through meticulously hand-drawn compositions, Glenn Ellul creates imagined worlds that feel both ancient and futuristic. Drawing inspiration from local architecture as well as his travels across Europe, Asia, and South America, the artist constructs impossible cities, sacred interiors, suspended ruins, and speculative monuments that blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The exhibition’s title, Architopia: Echoes of Elsewhere, reflects this concept of invented spaces shaped by nostalgia, memory, and psychological landscapes.

The artist’s works echo the visionary complexity of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, while also recalling the impossible spatial illusions of M. C. Escher and the architectural imagination of Richard England’s Mythopoli series. Much like the dreamlike cities described in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, these drawings function not as literal representations of places, but as meditations on how architecture can embody thought, emotion, and human experience.
Executed entirely in ink and without mechanical assistance, each artwork emerges through repetition, precision, and intense concentration. Every line contributes to dense visual environments that reward prolonged viewing and contemplation. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, the drawings invite audiences to lose themselves within layered architectural spaces where time and reality become fluid.

Architopia: Echoes of Elsewhere marks Glenn Ellul’s second solo exhibition and further establishes his distinctive artistic language, one rooted in meticulous craftsmanship, imaginative storytelling, and immersive architectural vision.
