An iconic symbol in Gozo! St George ‘Tal-Hagar’ statue permanently moved to a museum
Bidding farewell to unmistakable landmark in Gozo!

All of Gozo’s residents especially those from Rabat have come to know the St George ‘Tal-Hagar’ statue, a statue which had been overlooking Enrico Mizzi Street for decades.

It had stood there for almost 100 years, having found its place in front of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Pompei during the year of 1925.

The St George ‘Tal-Hagar’ statue was originally meant to be standing between the corner of Saint George's Street and Library Street in Victoria but was then placed in the street where it had stood for 99 years instead.

Over the years it slowly became an iconic symbol recognised by many in Gozo but it has now been permanently moved to the Il-Hagar, Heart of Gozo Museum in Victoria.

The owners of the building on which it stood on have decided to develop the building and thus it had to be removed to be protected.

The statue can be found right by the entrance of the museum, welcoming all those who pass by.

The history of this iconic statue dates back to 1901, when a simple wooden cross was placed on the hilltop by local farmers.
