A Gozitan marvel! Series of photos show what the unique and endemic Fungus rock lizard truly looks like
It is only found living at Dwejra’s Fungus rock.
Thanks to a series of photos uploaded by the Dwejra Marine Environmental Education Centre and taken by Arnold Sciberras, we can now get a good look at the rare and endemic Fungus rock wall lizard.
It is an incredibly amazing creature that is known for its reddish belly and blue-like flanks. This kind of lizard can only be found living on the Fungus Rock, the islet off the Dwejra coast in Gozo which can only be accessed with special permission as it is a nature reserve.
The Fungus Rock lizard otherwise known as the Podarcis filfolensis ssp. Generalensis, is a sub species of the Maltese wall lizard.
In fact, the Maltese wall lizard has four different sub-species. These include two different sub-species, in which one can only be found living in Filfla and the other is endemic to St Paul’s islands.
What incredible creatures!
