What a sight! Record-breaking fireworks light up Gozo’s Assumption feast in Żebbuġ
Phenomenal, spectacular and massive were just some of the words used by the hundreds of people who flocked to Żebbuġ, Gozo for this year’s ħarqa tan-nar tal-art (ground fireworks display), held as part of the Assumption of Mary feast.
The highlight of the night was the ignition of two enormous irdieden (traditional Maltese Catherine wheels), set off from a rooftop and perfectly synchronised with music. Each wheel measured an impressive 40 feet in height and 29 feet in width, while a record-breaking 2,079 shots were fired during the display.
This achievement was made possible by the Għaqda tan-Nar Marija Assunta of Żebbuġ, Gozo, during the first-ever edition of Luminaria Blu – La Magia dell’Assunta.
What makes the accomplishment even more impressive is that this volunteer-led fireworks society was only established 10 months ago. Thanks to their passion and hard work, the Assumption feast in Żebbuġ will go down in history for this record.
Hats off to all the volunteers who made this unforgettable show possible!
