Usually known for keeping us updated on changing skies, the writer behind Maltese Islands Weather shared a very different kind of story this week – one that unfolded on the ground.
While driving along a busy road in Gozo, he spotted a Mediterranean chameleon caught in the middle of traffic, with cars rushing past non-stop. He stopped safely, picked it up, and even made a quick video call to the Wildlife Rescue Team to ensure the reptile was in good health. Once confirmed, he drove it to a safer spot and released it back into nature.
Alongside a few sweet photos of the rescued creature, he wrote an important reminder: ‘Being nice to animals costs nothing.’
The Mediterranean chameleon is legally protected in the Maltese Islands, meaning that disturbing, keeping, killing, selling, or trading this species is strictly prohibited. Acts like this remind us of the importance of looking out for local wildlife, even in the most unexpected of places.
Have you ever seen one IRL?
