A powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, today the 30th of July, 2025, was recorded right here in Malta.

The seismic monitoring equipment at Junior College – University of Malta detected the earthquake’s initial waves just 13 minutes after the event occurred.

Despite being thousands of kilometres away, the shockwaves of the quake were strong enough to reach the Maltese Islands, demonstrating the sensitivity and importance of local seismic monitoring efforts. The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific, though no alerts were issued for the Mediterranean.

The Junior College Seismic Monitoring Group shared the data on social media. This recording highlights how local infrastructure contributes to international scientific awareness and highlights the reach and scale of seismic activity around the world.

Isn’t it incredible how the Earth’s movements can be recorded all the way from the other side of the globe?
