The Church of the Annunciation, known locally as tal-Lunzjata, is one of Salina’s most treasured historical landmarks, standing quietly yet proudly since the early 16th century. This humble chapel has long held a special place in the hearts of the surrounding communities, particularly the people of Naxxar, who regarded it with deep devotion.

For generations, they upheld a cherished annual tradition: walking in procession to the little church on the feast of the Ascension. This heartfelt pilgrimage reflected both their faith and their respect for this enduring sanctuary.

Over the centuries, the chapel required strengthening to preserve its structure. By 1776, buttresses were added to stabilise its sliding walls, ensuring that the historic building could withstand time and continue serving as a place of prayer and reflection. These architectural additions, still visible today, speak to the care and commitment of past generations to safeguard this spiritual heritage.

The Jesuits also played an important role in maintaining the Church of the Annunciation, overseeing its upkeep and spiritual use for many years. Thanks to their stewardship, and the devotion of the local community, this modest yet significant chapel remains a testament to Malta’s layered religious history, enduring traditions, and the timeless bond between faith and place.
