The Police Mounted Section was established in 1860

In a venture to celebrate the rich history of the Police Mounted Section in Malta, the Department of Information, from its archives, shared a nostalgic throwback video on its social media page.

The black-and-white video takes viewers on a journey back to the 1970s. The footage captures the grace and strength of the equine partners patrolling the historic streets of Valletta.

Established in the year 1860, the Police Mounted Section consisted of six horses back in the day. The stables were situated on Archbishop Street in Valletta. However, they were later transferred to Marsa.

The Mounted Section’s main aim was to perform patrol duties around Malta and to maintain public order while performing duties with dignitaries when they visited the island. However, from time to time, the Mounted Section was also called to perform other duties, including carrying the deceased.

Presently, the Mounted Section is made up of 21 horses and 15 officers. The staff police are instructed to perform various tasks including patrol work to deter criminal activity, serve as an assurance to the public, escort ambassadors, maintain public order and crowd control, and perform displays, especially during the annual celebrations of the Police Anniversary which happens in July.

The shared video not only showcases the Section's operational prowess but also sheds light on the well-deserved retirement of these loyal equine colleagues after years of dedicated service.

This glimpse into the past serves as a tribute to the timeless legacy of the Police Mounted Section and its significant role in safeguarding Malta’s streets.

Do you have any memories of a similar scene?
