A rare treasure! MUŻA acquires 18th-century Chinese porcelain with a knightly connection
An artefact through which East met West has found its way to Malta.
Malta’s national art museum, MUŻA, has just announced the exciting acquisition of a new addition to its growing collection – and it's one that art, history, and design lovers alike won’t want to miss.
The museum has secured a rare and exquisite Chinese porcelain service dating back to the late 18th century, crafted specifically for export to the European market during a time of immense cultural exchange between East and West.
What makes this porcelain service particularly exceptional is not only its craftsmanship and elegance in the rococo style, but also the personal touch it carries: the entire service is adorned with the coat of arms of Alexandre de La Motte-Baracé, who was appointed Bailiff of the Order of St John in 1789. This detail likely places the production of the porcelain set right around that time, adding a layer of rich historical significance that ties it directly to Malta’s noble past.
Such Chinese export porcelains were often custom-made for European aristocrats and high-ranking officials, reflecting both the owner's status and the era’s fascination with oriental artistry. This newly acquired set is a prime example of that cross-cultural artistry and will soon be available for public viewing.
Keep an eye out for its unveiling, and don't miss the chance to view this incredible artefact that bridges continents and centuries.
