A new era: Malta switched on its first electrical light 140 years ago
This happened at Valletta’s Royal Opera House.

We’ve grown so accustomed to lighting up our entire house with a mere flick of a switch that we can’t even begin to imagine a life without electricity!

However, that was a reality that our ancestors had to face not too long ago…

That’s right! Electrical lights arrived in Malta 140 years ago, in January 1882.

Guests paying a visit to The Royal Opera House on 24th January 1882 were the first to witness electrical lights in Malta.

Later on that same night, St George’s Square was similarly lit up for all pedestrians to witness.

The first private residence to benefit from electricity was owned by Chevalier Edward Rosenbush and situated along Valletta’s Merchants Street.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Chevalier had thrown a party and invited loads of people over to his residence.
