A hidden gem! Did you know that the St Nicholas Water Tower in Ħamrun was constructed in 1615?
The St. Nicholas Water Tower stands proudly in Ħamrun, a historical landmark steeped in significance and wedged between two modern buildings. Facebook page, 8000 Years of Water posted a beautiful photo by photographer, Daniel Cilia.
The Round Tower is a water inspection site built on the hill of St Nicholas and was part of the incredible aqueduct connection built by the Knights. Known locally as Il-Monument tat-Tromba or it-Turretta ta’ Atocia, this tower has stood as a testament to the importance of water throughout history.
Emblazoned with a marble inscription, the tower bears a profound message: "As there is life in water, life started from water. Bontadino de Bontadini Delivered the Waters 1615." This inscription serves as a reminder of the vital role water plays in sustaining life and its symbolic significance in human history.
Constructed in 1615, the St. Nicholas Water Tower has witnessed centuries of change while remaining a steadfast symbol of resilience and continuity.
Today, it stands as a tribute to Malta's rich heritage and the enduring importance of water management. As the inscription suggests, life truly does begin and flourish where water flows.
The tower is no longer in use today and is in unfortunately a dilapidated state. You’ll have to look out for it as you walk or drive by as modern houses are built on either side.
Have you ever come across this water tower in Ħamrun?
