Have you ever noticed Hamrun’s historic Round Tower wedged in between two buildings?
A gem hidden in the heart of this busy town.
If you’re ever passing through Hamrun and have the chance to look around a little, you’ll probably notice some cool structures. One such structure is the Round Tower that is wedged between two modern buildings.
The Round Tower is a water inspection site built on the hill of St Nicholas and was part of the incredible aqueduct connection built by the Knights. Locally it is known as Il-Monument tat-Tromba or it-Turretta ta’ Atocja.

Water originally flowed through an open tank in the tower which was then inspected. If you look closely, the tower bears the Wignacourt coat of arms and a Latin inscription which translates to “As there is life in water, life started from water.”
The tower is no longer in use today and is in unfortunately a dilapidated state. You’ll have to look out for it as you walk or drive by as modern houses are built on either side.
