It’s all happening on the 15th of June.

On the 15th of June, Heritage Malta is giving locals and tourists alike the opportunity to explore Abbatija tad-Dejr, an early Christian site in Rabat that is typically closed to the public for conservation reasons.

This historic location features at least four hypogea, or underground burial chambers, that lie adjacent to each other, offering a unique glimpse into Malta's ancient past.

The name 'Abbatija tad-Dejr' carries intriguing historical significance, with 'Dejr' possibly meaning 'sheepfold' but also referring to a convent or monastery, highlighting its rich and layered history.

Visitors will also have the chance to see a 13th-century chapel adorned with remnants of frescoes and numerous crosses, providing insights into the religious and cultural practices of the time.

Heritage Malta is opening the doors of Abbatija tad-Dejr for this special event from 9 am until 4 pm, with the last admission being at 3:30 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for history enthusiasts, scholars, and anyone interested in Malta’s early Christian heritage to experience one of the island’s hidden treasures.

Don’t miss this chance to step back in time and explore the significant archaeological and historical richness of Abbatija tad-Dejr.

Visitors interested in this event can book their tickets at the Heritage Malta Store or at any of their museums and sites.

Have you ever visited Abbatija tad-Dejr?
