A warmer Christmas Day! Temperatures in Malta expected to be 5°C higher than last year
Mild temperatures, possible showers and windy days ahead.

If you’re keeping an eye on the skies this Christmas, you’re not alone, because the weather over the festive period is shaping up to be a bit of everything.

According to the Meteorological Office, Christmas Eve will start off on a pleasant note, especially for those planning outdoor errands or last-minute meet-ups. Wednesday morning is expected to be mostly sunny, with temperatures climbing to a comfortable 18°C. However, don’t let the bright start fool you — conditions are expected to change as the day goes on.

By later in the afternoon and into Christmas night, cloud cover is expected to increase, with the chance of showers that could turn thundery, and even bring hail in some areas. Overnight temperatures will dip to around 12°C.

Christmas Day itself is forecast to begin on a cloudy note, with the possibility of a few isolated showers lingering. That said, it will remain relatively mild, with daytime temperatures once again reaching 18°C, making this Christmas around 5°C warmer than last year. By evening, temperatures are expected to fall back to 12°C.

Looking back over the past decade, Malta’s warmest Christmas was recorded in 2022, when temperatures peaked at 20.7°C, while the coldest came in 2024, with daytime highs dropping to 13.6°C.

There’s better news for anyone planning to enjoy some fresh air on Boxing Day. Conditions are expected to improve, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures reaching a pleasant 19°C, before cooling to 13°C later in the evening.

One thing that will remain fairly consistent throughout the festive period, however, is the wind. From Christmas Eve onwards, winds are forecast to be moderate to rather strong (Force 4–5), blowing mainly from the southwest to south-southwest. These are expected to strengthen further by Friday evening, reaching Force 5 to 6.

Are you spending Christmas outdoors or indoors?
