A chilly twist! Unsettled skies over the Maltese Islands for Holy Week before an Easter warm-up
This week in the Maltese Islands is shaping up to be a turbulent one, especially as it coincides with Holy Week. According to popular Facebook page, Maltese Islands Weather, conditions will remain unstable and at times stormy through to Good Friday, before a welcome improvement arrives just in time for Easter Sunday.
It’s not looking great for tomorrow’s public holiday! The early part of the week is dominated by a vigorous low-pressure system bringing frequent showers, occasional hail, and strong northwesterly winds. From Tuesday through Thursday, outbreaks of rain will be persistent, with rough seas and gusty conditions making it feel particularly wintry. Temperatures are also taking a noticeable dip, with highs struggling in the low to mid-teens and nighttime lows dropping below 10°C.
Wednesday, April 1st, stands out as the coldest day of the week, and possibly the season, despite the date suggesting spring. Far from an April Fool’s joke, this chill is linked to a broader atmospheric disturbance. Earlier in the month, a sudden warming event in the Arctic disrupted normal circulation patterns, allowing cold air to plunge southwards across Europe and into the central Mediterranean.
As the week progresses toward Good Friday, conditions will gradually begin to stabilise, although some lingering showers may persist.
By the weekend, a shift is expected: skies will clear, winds will ease, and temperatures will rise. Easter Sunday is forecast to bring brighter, milder weather, offering a much-needed contrast after a notably stormy Holy Week.
