Proof that some of life's joys are timeless.
There’s something timeless about an afternoon walk by the sea with good friends – and a photo recently shared by the National Archives of Malta captures that sentiment perfectly.
Taken in April 1965, the black-and-white image shows a group of friends enjoying a peaceful stroll through the countryside of Lippija, on the outskirts of Imġarr, with the stunning Ġnejna Bay just visible in the background.
The photo forms part of the Maurice Mifsud Bonnici Collection, and it offers a rare window into everyday life in Malta during the 1960s. Though their names are not listed, their relaxed postures and light-hearted conversation speak volumes, reminding us of the enduring value of enjoying some fresh air with the ones you love.
Back then, Lippija was even quieter than it is today, its rural charm largely untouched by modern development. The surrounding area, rich in terraced fields and low stone walls, has long been a favourite among walkers and photographers alike. And with Ġnejna’s crystal-clear waters just a short walk away, it’s easy to see why this was – and still is – a popular spot for a casual day out.
The National Archives often share these beautifully preserved moments from Malta’s past, keeping local heritage alive for future generations. Keep an eye on their official Facebook page for more historical gems like this one.
