6 rock sports in Malta that will thrill you - take the challenge?
Malta is a really large rock in the middle of a sea – the perfect environment for several exciting rocks sports!

Malta is affectionately referred to as 'the rock' by locals. The island’s small size and makeup mean it is, essentially, a really large rock in the middle of a sea – the perfect environment for several exciting rock sports. Here’s what you can do in Malta.

1. Deep water soloing

Deep water soloing is the most obvious one, considering the amazing coast and beautiful sea these islands can boast of. Deep water soloing involves solo climbing a rocky coast without a harness until you can’t go further and throw yourself into deep water. If you’re trying this for the first time, be aware that falling gracefully is essential, as water can still break bones from a height. The Santa Marija Caves in Comino are an excellent location for DWS.

2. Bouldering

Bouldering is another one that comes easy, because Malta’s rocky environment and great climate offers plenty of opportunities to boulder. Without all the equipment required for climbing and granted you have crash-pads to fall on, you can do it almost anywhere. Do, however, check where to go, as some of the Maltese rock is very fragile and breaks easily. Bouldering is also great for those who enjoy the climbing sport but prefer not to go to heights.

3. Climbing

Rock climbing in Malta has become big. With plenty of local climbers, many with their own equipment, and a comprehensive guide to all the routes in Malta, you’ll have no trouble finding a climbing partner or where to go. New routes are constantly being created and guides updated regularly, however, Gozo is actually the best place to go climbing. In Malta, Wied Babu and Ghar Lapsi are two great climbing sites set in an awesome environment.

4. Abseiling

Abseiling is a great start for those who want to experience being on the rock but have not yet come to grips with climbing, bouldering or soloing. Going down is easier than going up, right? Still, abseiling takes some skill and definitely includes some thrill! Any climbing company will organise for you to have an abseiling experience in Malta, so why not give it a go?

5. Ziplining

Take it a step further and zoom across a valley suspended in air. It's much easier than the other rock sports mentioned, which definitely involve more skill and effort to master. In this case, everyone else does the hard work, while you have all the fun! Several adventure companies that offer climbing will also do abseiling and rig ziplines.

6. Slacklining

Not exactly a rock sport but worth a mention as it is relatively new to the island, slacklining involves similar safety equipment, and the slackline can be rigged across cliff faces, caves and rocks. Slacklining requires an altogether different skill, one difficult to master at that, but which will invoke a 'wow' anytime anyone sees it in action.

Whether you're an experienced enthusiast or just learning the ropes (pun intended), these sports are definitely worth doing in Malta!
